2017-2019. In the series An Unmaking, fragments of domestic life are brought into a closer
relationship to the damaged architectural. The title refers to a dismantling and undoing of places, things
and histories. The sculptures reference the crisis in Syria, but can also bring
to mind the many images of destruction we see daily in our news feeds. For this series furniture becomes pedestals
for ceramic sculptures that intersect the planes of tables and dressers and
fill drawers and seats of chairs with rubble. In researching this project, I
tried to imagine what a typical middle-class home in Aleppo or Homs might look
like. Vacation rental sites in Syria and the surrounding region turned out to
be a good source, (which is itself a painfully ridiculous Idea), I was struck
with how similar the apartments were furnished to any we might find in the
world.
